Beginning almost as performance art with several minutes of gestural light painting, “Expressions” is a nod to the action painters of abstract expressionism. Using my shutter to split that performance into segments of three to six seconds, familiar figures begin to emerge unbidden. These pareidolic images are given on-the-nose names that belie their happenstance origins, making this series of photographs appear – at first blush – to be simple calligraphic sketches.
